Kochi (Cochin)
It is a city strongly influenced by the Portuguese culture and is Kerala's commercial hub. You could sense its Portuguese character during a wander through the city when you stumble upon the Spice Markets, cantiveltered Chinese Fishing Nets, The Jewish Synagogue, The St. Francis Church and the Dutch Palace. The mesmerizing Kathakali performances is a must feature of Kochi's cultural life. The scenic setting with the stunning locations of the Arabian Sea and the backwaters surrounded by the palm groves, lush green fields, the inland lakes and the backwaters has rightly earned it its title 'Queen of the Arabian Sea'.
Munnar
A major centre of Kerala's tea industry, Munnar is situated at an altitude of 1800 metres. Located 130 kms east of Kochi, it is conceived as a romantic destination with its sublime greenery and the cool air. Cool throughout the year it is famous for the Mattupetty Lake - an alpine setting with green fields. It is also a real treatto those interested in trekking with its beautiful valleys.
Thekkady
Located 200 kms from Kochi, it is one of the main and the largest sanctuaries of southern India. Situated at a high altitude of around 1828 metres it has a cool climate throughout the year. Comprising 300 square miles of lush and tropical forest it has a vast artificial lake in the centre creating a natural habitat for the extensive wildlife. The best time to visit is during the dry months of December to June. Take a boat ride at the beautiful Periyar Lake and for the adventurous kind, go for a jungle trek. |

Kumarakom
Situated 90 kms from Kochi, Kumarakom lies on the Vembanad Lake in a thick tangle of tropical waterways. The backwaters of Kumarakom are both the basis of a distinct lifestyle and a fascinating thoroughfare. Traveling by boat along the Backwaters is one of the highlights of Kerala. Places of interest would include a visit to the bird sanctuary a favourite haunt for migratory birds. In other words, Kumarakom is a place to sit back and watch the mirror-still lagoon, enjoy the rejuvenating Ayurvedic massages and a backwater ride over the tranquil waters.

Alleppey
Located 64 kms north of Kochi is a small market town built around a curious maze of bridges and canals. A prominent stop for backwater boat rides(Kettuvalloms), the tranquil waters are green with water hyacinth and has schools of young fish feeding near the surface. More known for the Snake Boat Race that is held in August, Alleppey is fondly referred to as The 'Venice of the East'.

Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum)
The capital of Kerala, this coastal city is set on seven low hills. A commercial city, it is famous for the Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple (open only to the Hindus), the Napier museum housing the famous 8th-18th century South Indian Bronzes from Chola and Nayaka periods, The Shri Chitra Art Gallery which has an excellent collection of Indian Art. Besides schools specializing in the martial art Kalarippayat, the dance and theatre forms of Kathakali and Kutiyattam are located here.

Kovalam
Kovalam, a beach destination 10 kms south of Thiruvanthapuram, it comprises of four main stretches of beaches about 400 metres. The adventurous sorts may indulge into the popular beach activities like snorkeling, water skiing and body surfing. For the easy-go types they may just laze around at the beaches and enjoy the soft yellow white sands, warm clear waters and the wide views of the ocean's horizon.

Kozikode (Calicut)
This coastal city is where Vasco-Da Gama first landed on Indian soil 500 years ago. Calicut is famous for shopping fabric clothes, sweets and the typical Keralan chips. Sightseeing would include Pazhassi Raja Museum, Krishnan Menon Museum and a visit to the beach where one may laze around and scan the sea for jumping dolphins.
